Myra’s Wells vision is to provide clean water in Burkina Faso
West Africa. Dry, arid and poverty stricken. Low life expectancy. Low literacy rate. Myra’s Wells vision is to provide clean water in Burkina Faso.
Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in West Africa. A few places do have mains water, but even that supply can be dirty and unreliable. Many villages have open wells. They are almost always dirty and dry up within very few months of the rains finishing. Contaminated water leads to disease and may also lead to death, often the death of babies and young children.
So that is why Myra’s Wells vision is to provide clean water in Burkina Faso. A drilled well – at least 50 metres (165 feet) deep – can provide pure water for upwards of 2000 people, for drinking, cooking, and washing. It will also provide proper supplies of water for horticulture and livestock. Healthy livestock also contributes to the health of the people.
The provision of wells helps pastors of churches to tell the people of God’s love. It helps headteachers to open schools and extend existing ones – you can’t run a school without a water supply.
We are so fortunate in the UK to be able to turn on a tap. Many in villages in Burkina Faso have to walk miles to a proper well and back. Or use the open well. Or use dirty water from a stream. Others can see a well near them that is broken beyond repair. Or maybe they are not allowed to use it because they have the wrong religious or ethnic background.
Wells drilled by Myra’s Wells are cared for by local people and are freely available for all to use, regardless of background.
